New Member - Battery Replacement Question

Hi Joe

thank you for your response. I bought the boat last October and have not been able to see it since, due to medical issues. I live in Brooklyn and the boat lives in Noank CT. The mechanic working on it for me just told me that all 4 batteries need replacement. I’m not surprised, but I sure could use some advice what to replace them with. The engine is a 21hp Westerbeke There are 4 batteries in the boat and with the exception of running lights and electronics there isn’t alot on board to eat power. Present Batteries: group 29 AGM 2014.

I have two SPM 27 Interstate batteries (600 CCA 750 MCA Reserve capacity 160) on my 26 U, with a 18 HP Westerbeke engine. They were new in 2013 and I am replacing them this week with the same batteries.

I have the usual electronics, lights and also a Lewmar 40 electric winch that pulls around 150 amps (for about 30 seconds)

I also am installing a NOCO Genius Genpro 10 x 2 charger which replaces the broken Charles C-Charger I installed in 2013 with the new batteries. .The original 1987 charger was was primitive, when compared with the new ones

If you have refrigeration… my set up is not a good solution and I am sure there are more than few folks here who can answer the question for refrigeration equipped boats.

We do not have a frig, just the ice box. We cruise expensively and use 2 golf cat batteries ( Trojan T105’s ) Properly maintained expect 7 - 8 years. Start battery is a group 24 I think.

Powers all the nav, sailing instruments and lights. We do not have radar or AIS. The windlass is used when the engine is running and the alternator has kicked in.

They are in the lazarettos. This is about as low tech as you can get.

AGM , lithium and carbon all offer different benefits, all depends what matter most to you, how you plan to sail and moor it.
